The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, sanctioned Rs 5,659.22 crore for the Mission for Cotton Productivity (2026–27 to 2030–31) to tackle issues in India’s cotton sector. The mission aims to boost cotton productivity by developing disease and pest-resistant high-yielding variety seeds, implementing advanced crop production technologies, and ensuring quality cotton supply to the industry. It also focuses on promoting high-quality cotton exports and enhancing the quality of cotton through modernization of processing factories.
The mission emphasizes the development of climate-resilient, pest-resistant seeds, and technologies like High Density Planting System and Closer Spacing. It also includes initiatives to improve cotton quality through capacity building, modernization of processing factories, and strengthening cotton testing infrastructure. The goal is to position Indian cotton as a premium and sustainable product globally.
Furthermore, the mission aims to empower farmers by integrating market yards digitally, promoting cotton waste recycling, and enhancing resource efficiency. It also focuses on diversifying India’s fiber base by including natural fibers like flax, ramie, and bamboo. The mission will be executed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare and the Ministry of Textiles, involving various research institutes and centers across the country.
The Mission targets the production of 498 lakh bales of cotton by 2031, benefiting around 32 lakh farmers and promoting self-reliance in the sector. It also aims to reduce trash, promote natural fibers, and enhance traceability and certification. This initiative marks a significant step towards self-sufficiency in India’s cotton industry.
