Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan unveiled a new CBSE curriculum focusing on Computational Thinking (CT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) for students in Classes 3 to 8. The curriculum, titled “AI for Education, AI in Education,” is set to commence from the academic session of 2026-27. The initiative aims to equip young learners with essential digital and analytical skills early on.

The launch event, held in New Delhi, saw the presence of Minister of State for Education Jayant Chaudhary, along with key officials from the Ministry of Education, NCERT, and CBSE. Pradhan emphasized that integrating AI into school education is a significant step forward. He highlighted that the curriculum will encourage logical thinking, innovative perspectives, and a culture of creativity among students, preparing them for a technology-driven future.

The newly introduced curriculum comprises structured modules, teacher handbooks, and a clear assessment framework. It focuses on nurturing computational thinking skills, which encompass logical reasoning, problem-solving, pattern recognition, and the ethical utilization of technology. Additionally, students will explore practical applications of AI in everyday scenarios, while also enhancing their digital literacy, critical thinking, and responsible technology usage.

For students in Classes 3 to 5, computational thinking will be integrated across various subjects like mathematics, languages, and environmental studies through interactive learning methods such as puzzles, games, and storytelling. As students progress to Classes 6 to 8, they will delve into fundamental AI concepts alongside computational thinking principles.

Jayant Chaudhary stressed the importance of preparing students for the evolving technological landscape. He emphasized the need for children to not only consume technology but also become adept creators and leaders in the digital realm. The curriculum development aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE) 2023, promoting interdisciplinary learning by connecting AI concepts with mathematics, science, and the humanities, fostering critical and design thinking.

The phased rollout of the curriculum will initially focus on computational thinking, gradually expanding AI education in higher classes. Additional support materials will be accessible through platforms like DIKSHA.
