The Union Environment Ministry reaffirmed its support for the Great Nicobar Island development project, emphasizing a balance between port-led growth and environmental protection. The strategic initiative aims to elevate Great Nicobar into a key maritime and economic center due to its proximity to major shipping routes. The project includes an international Container Transhipment Terminal, an International Airport, a power plant, and a new township, all designed to comply with environmental regulations.
The government’s statement highlighted optimized land use, ecological management, and regional benefits as key project components. Despite concerns raised by opposition leader Rahul Gandhi about potential deforestation, the government assured compliance with Environmental Impact Assessment regulations. The project, spanning three phases, is set to cover a total area of 166.1 square km, with a phased approach to infrastructure development.
Tribal welfare is a central focus of the Great Nicobar Project, with measures in place to protect indigenous communities and enhance tribal reserves. The project’s alignment with tribal welfare policies underscores the government’s commitment to safeguarding Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups. The development plan includes compensatory afforestation measures and aims to minimize the impact on the island’s forest cover through strategic land use planning.
