Union Home Minister Amit Shah expressed concern over the rise in illegal coal mining and theft in Dhanbad and nearby areas. He proposed deploying CISF personnel as a priority measure under a “Zero Coal Leakage Plan.” Shah directed the CISF to establish Quick Response Teams and enhance security in vulnerable regions to combat illegal mining effectively.
Shah emphasized the importance of utilizing technology for surveillance. He instructed the use of high-resolution cameras at Integrated Command and Control Centres to identify individuals and areas involved in illegal mining activities. The government is committed to protecting public resources and ensuring law and order in legitimate coal mining operations.
Officials from the Ministry of Coal updated Shah on the progress made since the initial review in October 2025. They highlighted the authorization given to CISF and Coal India Limited officials to take legal action under the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, 1957. This authorization empowers them to conduct search and seizure operations and take legal action against illegal mining activities.
Shah stressed the need for continued efforts to combat illegal mining effectively. He urged strict enforcement of powers granted to CISF and Coal India Limited officials under the MMDR Act. Regular reviews of actions taken were also instructed to ensure compliance with the approved Standard Operating Procedure. Additionally, Shah recommended involving GST authorities to verify e-way bills for legally transported coal.
