Union Minister for Railways, Ashwini Vaishnaw, revealed that the inaugural Vande Bharat sleeper train will run from Guwahati in Assam to Howrah in West Bengal. The train has successfully completed all necessary trials, testing, and certification. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate this service later this month.

This milestone marks a significant achievement for Indian Railways, the country, and its passengers, as per the Minister. He also highlighted that 2026 will witness major reforms in Indian Railways, including the introduction of various passenger-centric initiatives. The districts set to benefit from this new service include Kamrup Metropolitan and Bongaigaon in Assam, and Coochbehar, Jalpaiguri, Maldah, Murshidabad, Purba Bardhaman, Hooghly, and Howrah in West Bengal.

The Vande Bharat Sleeper Train comprises 16 coaches, featuring 11 three-tier AC coaches, 4 two-tier AC coaches, and 1 first-class AC coach, accommodating approximately 823 passengers. With a design speed of up to 180 kmph, the semi-high-speed train offers ergonomically designed berths, improved cushioning, automatic doors with vestibules, and CCTV surveillance in all coaches.

Vaishnaw emphasized the development of a newly designed bogie with advanced suspension, elevating design standards. The train’s interiors and ladders boast an ergonomic design, prioritizing safety and security throughout. The timetable is structured for evening departures from the origin and early morning arrivals at the destination, ensuring a comfortable and secure travel experience.

Passengers onboard the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train will relish region-specific cuisine during their journey. Authentic Assamese dishes will be served on trains originating from Guwahati, while traditional Bengali delicacies will be offered on trains starting from Kolkata, enhancing the cultural dining experience. Additionally, the train is equipped with the modern KAVACH safety system, emergency talk-back unit, and an aerosol-based fire detection and suppression system for enhanced safety measures.
