Union Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has given the green light for the construction of 5,000 new houses to aid Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) impacted by ethnic violence in Manipur. This initiative falls under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G) for the fiscal year 2025-26. The decision came after a meeting between Chouhan and Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh.
The construction of these houses aims to assist IDPs affected by the prolonged law and order crisis in Manipur. During the meeting in New Delhi, Chouhan, along with the state’s Deputy Chief Ministers, assured the Manipur leaders of full support in their endeavors to restore peace and normalcy in the region. The Central Minister also warmly welcomed the Manipur delegation.
Manipur had recently proposed a special project under PMAY-G for the construction of these 5,000 houses to aid those impacted by ethnic violence. In response to the proposal, the Union Rural Development Ministry approved a special survey to gather details of eligible affected families. The state government has been authorized to continue the registration process for eligible beneficiaries under this special project.
The Union Rural Development Ministry has emphasized that the identification of beneficiaries for this project must strictly adhere to PMAY-G guidelines. Eligible beneficiaries will be identified and their details uploaded through the Awas Plus 2024 mobile application. The construction of these houses will follow the provisions outlined in the Framework for Implementation (FFI) of PMAY-G. Additionally, eligible beneficiaries who had received previous installments under PMAY-G but had their houses destroyed during the ethnic violence in May 2023 will also be considered for new houses.
