Union Minister Bhupender Yadav led discussions on modernizing the National Zoological Park, utilizing CSR funds, and mobilizing resources for zoos during the 46th Meeting of the Central Zoo Authority in Coimbatore. The meeting also saw the release of the CZA’s newsletter, highlighting achievements in conservation breeding, wildlife health, scientific management, and capacity building in Indian zoos. Key accomplishments and strategic goals of the CZA for the financial year 2026-27 were presented to the governing body.
Yadav and the CZA reviewed proposals for zoo modernization, establishing new zoological facilities, enhancing visitor education, scientific planning, and infrastructure development to maintain Indian zoos as hubs for conservation, education, and research. Discussions included the Management Effectiveness Evaluation of zoos, a concept note for developing a network of animal biobanks for conservation breeding programs, and Standard Operating Procedures for Zoo Veterinarians and Animal Handlers.
The meeting also addressed the National Wildlife Health Policy Concept Paper to tackle emerging wildlife health challenges. Additionally, discussions revolved around the use of CSR funds, resource mobilization for zoos, and enforcement of legal provisions against the unauthorized possession and display of non-native wild animal species. Earlier, Yadav inaugurated a National Workshop on “Tiger Re-introduction: Opportunities & Challenges” in Alwar, Rajasthan, emphasizing the importance of tiger conservation efforts.
