Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Shivraj Singh Chouhan has instructed officials to oversee agricultural operations in 270 rain-deficient districts, ensuring timely supply of fertilisers and seeds to farmers nationwide. A recent high-level meeting evaluated Kharif crop sowing progress, El Nino impact, monsoon status, and reservoir water levels. The meeting also reviewed fertiliser and seed availability, emphasizing continuous monitoring and coordination with states.
Chouhan emphasized obtaining real-time data through Krishi Vigyan Kendras and state bodies to guarantee farmers receive necessary fertilisers promptly. Despite a decrease in total sowing area compared to the previous year, positive advancements have been observed in paddy, pulses, and other crop sowing in various states. The minister called for weekly review meetings by pulses, oilseeds, and cotton missions to ensure swift actions based on field-level feedback.
Discussions during the meeting included forecasts from the India Meteorological Department, potential El Nino conditions, and rainfall status in 270 sensitive districts. The South-West Monsoon covered the entire country by July 9, a day later than usual, fostering favorable conditions for Kharif crop sowing in most states. Notably, the country experienced a 23% below-normal average rainfall from June 1 to July 15, with the highest deficiency in East and Northeast India.
