Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted the importance of social media platforms fairly sharing revenue with content creators, including journalists, media houses, influencers, professors, and researchers. He stressed that individuals creating content, regardless of their background, deserve a fair portion of the revenue generated online. Vaishnaw emphasized the need for equitable revenue sharing practices to be implemented throughout the digital ecosystem to support content creators.
His comments underscored the significance of platforms sharing revenue with those who contribute content, as they play a vital role in the platform’s success. He emphasized the importance of creators receiving their fair share, considering the substantial benefit platforms derive from their content. Vaishnaw also mentioned that ensuring fairness in revenue distribution would enhance India’s digital content economy.
The Minister’s remarks align with ongoing efforts by the government to enforce stricter regulations on digital platforms to ensure transparency and accountability. Additionally, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) proposed amendments to the IT Rules last year to address the increasing threat of deepfakes and AI-generated misinformation. The proposed rules require social media platforms to clearly identify and label AI-generated content, with specific guidelines for major platforms with a significant user base in India.
