Union Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan highlighted the key objectives for Indian agriculture during the Western Regional Agricultural Conference. He stressed the importance of increasing farmers’ incomes and ensuring the nation’s food and nutrition security. Chouhan mentioned the shift from traditional meetings to theme-based regional conferences for various agro-climatic zones, aiming to enhance agricultural practices.
India currently faces surplus stocks of wheat and rice, posing storage challenges, while emphasizing the need for self-reliance in pulses and oilseeds to strengthen food security. Chouhan reiterated that agriculture plays a vital role in the country’s economy, with farmers being its core, underscoring the government’s commitment to improving farmers’ livelihoods and simplifying farming practices.
The Minister discussed the significance of the Farmer ID system for efficient delivery of services to farmers, ensuring transparency and quick access to bank loans and government support. Amid global uncertainties, particularly in West Asia, Chouhan highlighted the importance of digital agricultural management to safeguard farmers and the nation during crises, urging states to expedite the implementation of the Farmer ID system.
Procurement of pulses and oilseeds is being managed through the Pradhan Mantri Annadata Aay Sanrakshan Abhiyan, while wheat and rice procurement falls under the Food Department’s purview. Chouhan assured that 100% procurement of pulses like chana, masoor, and tur will be conducted, with provisions for direct compensation to farmers in cases where physical procurement is not feasible. Additionally, he addressed the challenges faced by farmers due to falling crop prices and outlined support mechanisms such as the Management Information System and transport subsidies.
The Minister called for a state-specific approach to the Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan and emphasized institutional support for developing agriculture roadmaps. He highlighted the need for accurate assessment of crop losses and effective implementation of the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana to ensure affected farmers receive adequate support. Chouhan reiterated the government’s commitment to bolstering the agricultural sector and assisting farmers in times of need.
