Union Minister of State for Petroleum & Natural Gas and Tourism, Suresh Gopi, highlighted the importance of boosting the export of Mizoram’s horticulture and agricultural products to both domestic and international markets. Last year, Mizoram was recognized as the “Ginger Capital of India” by NITI Aayog due to its significant ginger production. Despite its small population and size, Mizoram holds a strategic position at the intersection of India, Myanmar, and Bangladesh, aligning with India’s Act East Policy.
Gopi commended Mizoram’s improving connectivity, especially with the ongoing development of a railway network. He also stressed the necessity of increasing hydro-electric projects to enhance the state’s self-sufficiency in power generation. During his visit to Kolasib, the Minister engaged with government officials and emphasized the importance of conducting a Census for effective planning and development strategies.
The Minister advocated for the establishment of more Kendriya Vidyalayas in Mizoram to enhance educational opportunities, particularly for women. Recognizing the pivotal role of education in national progress, he urged proactive measures to encourage women to pursue fields like nursing. Gopi underscored the significance of maintaining high-quality foundational education to empower children for future success. Mizoram’s fertile land potential for crop cultivation was highlighted, emphasizing the need for concerted efforts to export agricultural products beyond state borders.
Various government departments in Kolasib briefed the Minister on their operations and submitted their requirements and grievances. Following the meeting, Gopi visited the Oil Palm Processing Mill in Bukvannei, interacting directly with local oil palm farmers.
