Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs, Manohar Lal Khattar, stressed the importance of fully and promptly utilizing funds allocated by the Central government for urban development. Speaking at a Regional Conference of Urban Development Ministers from Northern and Central States in Bhopal, Khattar highlighted that efficient coordination between state governments and the Centre is crucial for the timely completion of key projects. He emphasized that achieving the vision of a developed and self-reliant India by 2047, as envisioned by PM Narendra Modi, requires close cooperation between the Central and state authorities. By 2047, it is anticipated that nearly half of India’s population will transition to urban areas, necessitating proactive planning and implementation of urban development schemes. Khattar announced that the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs will conduct region-specific review meetings with states to ensure the effective execution of schemes. While acknowledging the diverse geographical conditions and challenges across states, he noted that while the Central government offers support, the primary responsibility for implementation lies with the State governments. Madhya Pradesh Urban Development and Housing Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya highlighted efforts to empower urban local bodies in the state economically and technically. He mentioned the prioritization of sewerage works in cities along the Narmada River and the commitment to prevent untreated wastewater discharge into the river. Vijayvargiya also shared that GIS-based property mapping in urban areas has significantly boosted property tax collection. He requested Central assistance for the completion of pending works under the AMRUT scheme. The event was attended by urban development ministers, Ministers of State, and senior officials from Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh.
