Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, emphasized India’s progress towards energy self-reliance through initiatives like the Biofuel Mission, Green Hydrogen Mission, and Samudra Manthan. These efforts aim to boost sustainable energy, support farmers, reduce reliance on imported fuels, and promote environmental conservation. Puri stated that by enhancing domestic energy production, adopting new technologies, and promoting ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat,’ India is poised to become a stronger global energy player in the next five years.

Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India is swiftly advancing towards energy transition with confidence, as per the Union Minister. Notably, the ethanol blending with petrol program, initiated from 2014-15 until May 2026, has saved over Rs 1.90 lakh crore in foreign exchange by replacing 310 lakh metric tonnes of imported crude oil. This initiative has also generated additional income exceeding Rs 1.6 lakh crore for farmers and reduced carbon emissions by more than 930 lakh metric tonnes, based on official data.

India’s renewable energy capacity has significantly grown from 76.38 GW in 2014 to 288.58 GW by June 30, 2026, as per government data presented in Parliament recently. Solar power leads the renewable energy sector with 162.15 GW capacity, followed by wind power at 57.44 GW and hydro power at 57.24 GW. Additionally, bio power contributes 11.75 GW to the renewable energy mix. The country currently boasts a total non-fossil fuel-based electricity capacity of 297.36 GW, including 288.58 GW from renewable sources and 8.78 GW from nuclear power, according to Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy Shripad Yesso Naik.
