Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari emphasized the need for water conservation to transform Vidarbha’s reputation as a “farmer suicide zone” and boost prosperity in the region. Speaking ahead of the silver jubilee of Poorti Sinchan Samruddhi Kalyankari Sanstha, Gadkari highlighted the importance of initiatives like “Jalsamvad” and “Jalkranti” in Vidarbha, scheduled for May 17 and 18.
Gadkari stressed that India does not suffer from water scarcity but lacks effective water resource planning and management. He advocated for techniques like organic farming, drip irrigation, and the integration of artificial intelligence in agriculture to enhance water management. Notably, the utilization of soil from farm ponds in constructing national highways has led to increased groundwater levels in districts like Akola, Washim, and Buldhana, prompting farmers to adjust their crop patterns.
The minister underscored the significance of public involvement in water conservation efforts, stating that non-governmental organizations and individual participation are crucial. He highlighted ongoing projects in groundwater-deficient areas like Warud-Morshi and Katol-Narkhed, where river and stream deepening activities are being conducted with community engagement. Gadkari also called upon local self-government bodies to actively support these initiatives.
Poorti Sinchan Samruddhi Kalyankari Sanstha, a key player in water conservation for the past 25 years, is known for its ‘Tamaswada Model’ recognized nationwide. To mark its silver jubilee, the organization is hosting two-day national conferences in Nagpur, with events like “Nagpur Jalsamvad-2026” and the “Jalkranti Conference” scheduled for May 17 and 18, 2026. The celebrations will witness the participation of renowned water experts, Padma awardees, and eminent figures from the social sector, along with the release of significant books such as ‘Jalparva’ and ‘Jalkranti.’
