Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, is set to participate in the final breakthrough ceremony of the Zojila Tunnel, a significant event in India’s infrastructure development. The breakthrough will take place at the Minamarg side in Ladakh’s Drass district, marking a crucial milestone in the construction of the 13.153-km tunnel.
The Zojila Tunnel, located in the challenging Himalayan corridor between Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, aims to provide year-round connectivity in an area prone to heavy snowfall and extreme weather conditions. Situated at an elevation of 11,578 ft above sea level, the tunnel is a remarkable engineering feat in India’s mountain infrastructure sector.
Upon completion, the tunnel will ensure uninterrupted connectivity between Srinagar and Ladakh, benefiting regions like Drass, Kargil, and Leh. It will enhance mobility, logistics, and strategic access in a sensitive border zone, fostering economic growth and tourism in the region.
The Zojila Tunnel Project holds immense socio-economic and strategic significance, promising improved regional connectivity, reduced isolation, and enhanced support for economic activities and essential services. It is expected to boost civilian and military mobility, strengthen national operational readiness, and enhance connectivity and security in a crucial frontier corridor.
A dedicated team of over 1,200 personnel, predominantly locals, has been working on the project since October 2020, ensuring safety with 10 million safe man-hours achieved. The completion of the excavation phase brings the project closer to its goal of seamless all-weather connectivity between Kashmir and Ladakh, ushering in long-term benefits for the region.
