Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, reaffirmed the government’s dedication to nurturing a competitive and innovative pharmaceutical industry while ensuring healthcare affordability. Goyal shared his positive meeting with the Indian Pharmaceutical Alliance (IPA) delegation, led by President Dr. Sharvil Patel, on social media platform X.
The discussions revolved around bolstering India’s pharmaceutical innovation ecosystem through increased investments in research and development (R&D), clinical research, and advanced therapeutics. The focus was on fostering collaboration between the government and the pharmaceutical sector to drive innovation and enhance global competitiveness.
Goyal reiterated the government’s commitment to providing a conducive environment for the pharmaceutical industry, emphasizing innovation alongside affordable healthcare access. India’s pharmaceutical industry, a major global player in supplying cost-effective generic medicines, has been supported by various government initiatives promoting local manufacturing, research, and innovation.
The domestic pharma and healthcare market witnessed significant activity in the second quarter of 2026, with 65 deals totaling $13.9 billion. Notably, a substantial overseas acquisition by an Indian pharmaceutical firm contributed to this figure, with overall deal values showing a 12% increase from the previous quarter. Mergers and acquisitions in the sector strengthened, with transaction volumes rising by 17% quarter on quarter, reaching a record high in terms of values.
