Union Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office and Lok Sabha MP from the Kathua-Udhampur constituency of Jammu and Kashmir, Jitendra Singh, announced the renaming of Kathua railway station to “Martyr Captain Sunil Kumar Choudhary Railway Station Kathua” in response to public demand. The Northern Railway issued an order stating the immediate effect of the name change, which will also reflect in English and Devanagari spellings. However, other details in the “Alphabetical List of Railway Stations in India” will remain unchanged.
Captain Sunil Kumar Choudhary, a former officer in the Gorkha regiment of the Indian Army belonging to the 7/11 Gorkha Rifles, was honored with the Kirti Chakra and Sena Medal posthumously. In 2008, Choudhary led an operation against ULFA militants, displaying immense bravery by eliminating two militants despite being shot in the chest. His courageous actions led to his recognition with the Kirti Chakra posthumously.
