Union Minister and BJP MP Suresh Gopi has taken his case to the Supreme Court after the Kerala High Court refused to dismiss an election petition questioning his victory in the 2024 general elections from the Thrissur Lok Sabha constituency. Gopi’s plea challenges the Kerala High Court’s ruling that rejected his objections to the election petition’s maintainability, allowing the case to proceed to trial on allegations of corrupt electoral practices.

In response to Gopi’s request to dismiss the election petition at the outset, Justice Kauser Edappagath of the Kerala High Court, in an order dated April 1, ruled against him, stating that the petition’s maintainability challenge was not valid. The court decided that the election petition should not be dismissed immediately, overruling Gopi’s preliminary objections.

While the High Court removed one allegation concerning the distribution of shade umbrellas to vendors in a vegetable market, it directed that the remaining allegations of corrupt practices be examined during the trial. The petition, filed by Binoy A.S., district president of the All India Youth Federation (AIYF) in Thrissur, accused Gopi of various corrupt practices during the 2024 Lok Sabha campaign, including exploiting religious sentiments for electoral gains and making promises of benefits to voters.

Union Minister Suresh Gopi secured a significant victory in the 2024 general elections from the Thrissur Lok Sabha constituency, marking the BJP’s first win in Kerala. He won by a substantial margin and currently holds the position of Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas. The Supreme Court, after receiving Gopi’s Special Leave Petition (SLP) on May 26, has postponed further consideration of the matter to August 31.
