Union Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare and Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Union Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju visited flood-affected regions in Assam’s Jonai subdivision to promise quick rehabilitation and restoration of essential services. They inspected flood-affected areas in Arunachal Pradesh before heading to Assam, where they assessed the damage caused by the swollen Simen River.
The ministers surveyed the railway bridge over the Simen River at Simen Chapori, which suffered damage due to the strong current from continuous rainfall upstream. They then toured severely affected villages under Talem Gram Panchayat in the Jonai Assembly constituency, interacting with residents to understand the extent of the damage and the challenges faced by flood-affected families.
Chouhan assured the affected population that the Centre would collaborate with the state government to resolve issues related to drinking water supply, road connectivity, restoration of flood-damaged agricultural land, and other critical infrastructure. He also pledged efforts to facilitate the early rehabilitation of displaced families. The ministers evaluated the overall flood situation and monitored the immediate relief efforts in the affected areas.
Large parts of the Assam–Arunachal border region in Jonai have suffered extensive damage due to heavy rainfall, leading to overflowing mountain-fed rivers. More than 20 villages and over 500 families have been impacted by the floods, with ongoing disruptions to normal life despite receding waters. Residents are grappling with shortages of safe drinking water, food supplies, and healthcare services, while flood debris obstructs access to many homes.
Several houses remain submerged in water and mud, hindering families from resuming normal life despite improvements in the flood situation.
