Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has given the green light for the replacement of a level crossing gate between Malahar Halt and Samsi stations with a modern Road Over Bridge (ROB) under the Katihar Division. This move, approved at a cost of Rs 177 crore fully funded by the Railways, signifies a significant step in infrastructure development within the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), according to Chief Public Relations Officer Kapinjal Kishore Sharma.
The project aims to address the high traffic volume in the area, with a Traffic Vehicle Units (TVU) count of 4,21,001 as per the July 2024 traffic census, emphasizing the critical need for grade separation to enhance traffic management and safety. The plan includes constructing a Road Over Bridge at the current level crossing for local traffic and an additional ROB at a diversion location to efficiently manage city and through traffic, ensuring smooth traffic flow.
Upon completion, the initiative is expected to notably boost road and rail safety, facilitating smoother traffic movement and enhancing connectivity in the Malahar–Samsi section in Malda district of West Bengal under the Katihar Division. The project is set to benefit students, daily commuters, and local traders by providing easier access to educational institutions, workplaces, and markets, while also supporting economic growth and regional development.
The Northeast Frontier Railway, headquartered near Guwahati, serves the Northeastern states, seven districts of West Bengal, and five districts of Bihar, reflecting its commitment to modernization and passenger-centric infrastructure development.
