The United States and Saudi Arabia have signed a significant civil nuclear cooperation agreement, marking a crucial development in their strategic alliance. The agreement, known as a “123 agreement,” was signed by US Energy Secretary Chris Wright and Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman. This deal paves the way for American companies to engage in Saudi Arabia’s planned nuclear energy program.

The US Department of Energy hailed this agreement as the cornerstone of a long-term partnership worth billions of dollars. It aims to support Saudi Arabia’s nuclear aspirations while furthering US commercial, strategic, and non-proliferation goals. American firms will now have increased access to Saudi Arabia’s growing nuclear energy sector, benefiting both nations economically.

Both countries have committed to upholding high standards of nuclear safety, security, and non-proliferation through the accompanying safeguards agreement. US officials emphasized that these agreements underscore the shared commitment to enhancing US-Saudi commercial ties and ensuring prosperity and security for allies. The deal is set to uphold top-notch nuclear safety and nonproliferation standards, leveraging cutting-edge American nuclear technology.

The agreement aligns with the Trump administration’s push to bolster US leadership in the global civil nuclear market and boost American nuclear technology exports. It is expected to facilitate the export of US nuclear technology, create well-paying jobs, enhance US energy and national security, reinforce global non-proliferation norms, and strengthen strategic relations with Saudi Arabia. This move builds upon President Trump’s executive order promoting American civil nuclear exports under the US Atomic Energy Act of 1954.
