Uproar broke out in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday as members from both opposition and ruling parties disrupted proceedings regarding alleged coercion in the upcoming Telangana municipal elections set for Wednesday. BJP MP T. Lakshman raised concerns about a tribal candidate from Telangana who reportedly died by suicide after being pressured by a state minister to withdraw from the polls. The ruling party was accused of influencing the candidate, resulting in the tragic incident just before the urban local body elections.
The Upper House witnessed protests as members sought immediate discussion during zero hour. Chairman C.P. Radhakrishnan intervened, explaining that the issue couldn’t be addressed during zero hour due to the significance of all matters in the House. He assured Lakshman of a chance to elaborate after Question Hour, urging for calm to maintain decorum. Additionally, BJD Rajya Sabha MP Sulata Deo from Odisha advocated for animal welfare during her intervention, emphasizing the need for dedicated ambulances and more veterinary hospitals in every district to prioritize animal health over human healthcare.
Deo stressed the importance of better infrastructure to care for and safeguard stray and domestic animals, citing concerns over animal cruelty and neglect. Meanwhile, Parliament is preparing for a crucial general discussion on the Union Budget 2026-27, with the Rajya Sabha continuing deliberations on the budget presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. The upcoming session is anticipated to focus on fiscal priorities amidst ongoing political dynamics.
