US-based AI company Anthropic is embroiled in a controversy with the Pentagon, now known as the Department of War, considering cutting ties with the firm led by Dario Amodei due to its insistence on placing restrictions on how the US military utilizes its AI models. Anthropic’s AI model Claude was reportedly involved in a US military operation to apprehend former Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro through a partnership with AI software company Palantir, as per a Wall Street Journal report.

The Pentagon is contemplating terminating its association with Anthropic, with an administration official mentioning that all options are being considered, including scaling back or completely ending the partnership. Despite this, an Anthropic spokesperson affirmed the company’s dedication to leveraging advanced AI for US national security purposes.

Replacing Claude immediately would pose challenges for the US military as other model companies are not as advanced. Anthropic had secured a contract worth up to $200 million with the Pentagon the previous year. Reports indicate that the Pentagon is urging four AI companies, including Anthropic, to allow the military to utilize their tools for all lawful purposes, with the other companies being OpenAI, Google, and Musk’s xAI.

Claude, Anthropic’s next-generation AI assistant, is designed to be safe, accurate, and secure. The company expanded its enterprise AI assistant with a new automation layer aimed at managing complete business workflows, causing concerns about software stocks globally and impacting Indian IT stocks. Investors are wary of artificial intelligence potentially replacing significant segments of the software industry, leading to a significant sell-off referred to as the “SaaSpocalypse.”
