The US Ambassador to Spain, Benjamin Leon, has advised Spain to exercise caution regarding China’s participation in critical areas such as telecommunications, data management, and defense. Leon expressed concerns about the potential risks to security, technology, and essential infrastructure due to China’s expanding presence in strategic sectors. He specifically highlighted worries about awarding public contracts to companies associated with Chinese tech giant Huawei, which the US considers a security threat.
Benjamin Leon emphasized the importance of ensuring that China does not infiltrate sectors deemed vital for national security. While acknowledging the possibility of maintaining economic relations with China, he stressed the necessity of implementing safeguards to prevent Chinese involvement in critical areas. Leon underscored the need for Spain to be vigilant in safeguarding its interests against potential Chinese influence.
The US Ambassador cautioned that China’s objective is to dominate crucial technologies and highlighted the risks posed by unfair trade practices and economic coercion to supply chains, scientific research, and security. This warning comes amidst strained relations between the US and Spain, particularly concerning defense spending and geopolitical matters. The rift between the two countries escalated following Spain’s refusal to support a NATO commitment to increase defense expenditure to 5% of GDP.
