Washington and Paris had a heated exchange over the reappointment of Volker Turk as the UN Human Rights chief. Tensions escalated in the Security Council when the US staged a walkout as France began to address the issue.
The dispute stemmed from the General Assembly’s vote granting Turk a second term as the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. Despite opposition from the US and Russia, Turk secured a resounding victory with 144 countries voting in favor, while ten opposed and 13 abstained.
The rift between the US and its allies was evident as the US walked out against France, showcasing the growing divide between President Donald Trump and several US allies. France drew criticism from the US for its remarks on social media, prompting a sharp response from the US representative.
