The United States launched additional military strikes on multiple Iranian targets in response to an alleged drone attack on a commercial oil tanker near the Strait of Hormuz. This action followed a previous strike by US forces after an Iranian attack on the vessel M/V Ever Lovely. Iran was given a chance to comply with a ceasefire agreement but instead carried out another strike on a tanker in a critical maritime trade route.
US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed that the strikes were conducted at the direction of the Commander in Chief. Iran had the opportunity to honor the ceasefire agreement but chose to escalate the situation with a drone attack on the M/T Kiku. The Panama-flagged tanker was carrying over two million barrels of crude oil at the time near the Strait of Hormuz.
The military operation targeted Iranian military surveillance infrastructure, communication systems, air defense sites, drone storage facilities, and minelayer capabilities. US Navy and Air Force fighter jets conducted strikes on 10 Iranian military targets in response to the drone attack on M/T Kiku. The US aimed to degrade Iran’s ability to threaten international shipping in the region through these actions.
Tensions between the US and Iran have heightened with these military strikes. Despite the escalation, commercial shipping continues through the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial energy corridor for global oil exports. US forces remain vigilant and prepared to ensure the safe passage of commercial vessels in the region.
