Calls for expanding the United Nations Security Council to include India gained attention in the US Congress during a debate on reshaping the global body. Congressman Ami Bera highlighted the need to update the Council’s membership to better reflect current world dynamics. He specifically mentioned India as a deserving candidate for permanent membership, along with other nations like Brazil, Germany, and Japan. The discussion took place at a House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing focused on UN reform.

Lawmakers emphasized the importance of adapting the Security Council to present-day realities, noting that its current structure dates back to 1945. The debate included proposals to include additional nations in the Council to better represent the modern geopolitical landscape. While acknowledging the Council’s outdated composition, US Ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz expressed concerns about the challenges of implementing reforms due to political complexities.

The hearing also addressed the Trump administration’s efforts to revamp the UN system, emphasizing the need for strategic diplomacy and burden sharing. Discussions touched on potential changes within the Security Council, such as introducing more elected members or altering the veto system for permanent members. Despite calls for reform, achieving consensus among major powers on expanding permanent membership remains a significant challenge.

Advocates for UN reform highlighted the importance of addressing bureaucratic inefficiencies within the organization. They suggested that immediate improvements could be made through reforms in the UN General Assembly, which has accumulated numerous mandates over the years without adequate review. The focus on enhancing operational efficiency and reducing costs underscored the broader push to realign the UN’s priorities towards maintaining global peace and security.
