US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth informed senators that the ongoing war with Iran has incurred an estimated cost of $37.5 billion. This disclosure came as the Trump administration requested nearly $88 billion in emergency funding due to escalating tensions in the Strait of Hormuz.
During a Senate Appropriations Committee hearing on President Donald Trump’s funding request, Hegseth stated that the $37.5 billion estimate covered current expenses and anticipated military costs until September 30. The administration’s total request includes approximately $67 billion designated for military purposes.
Hegseth emphasized that the requested funds, totaling $87.6 billion, are crucial for military readiness. This allocation would cover various expenses such as military pay, equipment replacement, forward-deployed forces, fuel, and National Guard support. Additionally, $46 billion would be allocated to enhance munitions production and expedite investments in hypersonic weapons, counter-drone systems, satellites, and other defense capabilities.
If the additional funds are not approved by Congress, Hegseth warned that training exercises might be reduced. He highlighted the urgent need to address deferred maintenance and depleted weapons stocks within the military. Hegseth stressed that without the requested funds, critical shortages could jeopardize service member payments, equipment replenishment, and essential operations.
