Senior US lawmakers and officials are advocating for enhanced and results-oriented relations with Pakistan, acknowledging the complexity of the current relationship. A bipartisan symposium held on Capitol Hill, led by Tom Suozzi and Jack Bergman, convened over 200 policymakers, diplomats, and experts to evaluate the trajectory of US-Pakistan ties. Suozzi emphasized the significance of strengthening partnerships with key allies like Pakistan during times of increasing global divisions.
Bergman underscored the importance of dialogue and collaboration across differences, emphasizing that unity is cultivated through conversation and shared aspirations for progress. Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United States, Rizwan Saeed Sheikh, characterized the relationship as enduring and impactful, highlighting successful partnerships spanning nearly eight decades that have had global benefits. Assistant Secretary of State S. Paul Kapur expressed the US’s desire for tangible outcomes from the bilateral relationship, aiming to translate goodwill and high-level attention into concrete advantages for both nations.
Discussions at the symposium delved into security and economic cooperation, analyzing regional stability, Pakistan’s relationships with India and China, and opportunities for expanding trade and investment. While acknowledging the current positive state of the partnership, experts emphasized the need for long-term sustainability. Touqir Hussain stressed the importance of substantive US policies beyond appearances, emphasizing the necessity of effective strategies for fostering strong partnerships.
Security concerns, particularly regarding the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), were highlighted, with calls for ensuring Pakistan’s stability. Efforts to strengthen civilian law enforcement to combat terrorism, organized crime, and cross-border threats were also emphasized. On the economic front, discussions focused on Pakistan’s digitalization efforts and macroeconomic adjustments, with calls for a clearer industrial policy to boost exports and foreign exchange. The symposium aimed to facilitate a more cooperative and strategic path forward between the US and Pakistan, learning from the past and assessing the current state of affairs.
