US lawmakers have introduced a bipartisan bill to safeguard the Optional Practical Training (OPT) program for international students, including those from India. The Keep Innovators in America Act aims to provide stability and certainty for students, universities, and employers by formalizing the OPT program into law. This legislation seeks to allow international students to engage in practical training and work authorization related to their field of study.

The bill intends to amend the Immigration and Nationality Act to ensure that international students can pursue practical training and employment opportunities aligned with their educational pursuits. By codifying the OPT program, policymakers aim to prevent sudden policy changes and maintain consistency in supporting foreign graduates. Representatives emphasized the importance of educating and retaining top talent in the US to enhance national competitiveness.

The move comes in response to concerns raised after the Trump administration hinted at the potential elimination of the OPT program. Lawmakers stress the significant economic contributions of international students, noting that in a single academic year, they added $42.9 billion to the US economy. The bill has garnered support from various industry groups, universities, and advocates for immigration reform.

Supporters of the bill highlight the critical role of international students in driving innovation and economic growth in the US. Industry leaders and education advocates emphasize the need to provide clarity and stability by enshrining the OPT program in law. The bill’s proponents underscore the importance of retaining global talent in the face of increasing competition from other countries.
