The next round of talks between Israel and Lebanon, facilitated by the US, is scheduled to take place in Rome from August 4 to 6. The focus of the discussions will be on enhancing a pilot zone in southern Lebanon, resolving border disputes, and moving towards implementing the framework agreement signed by both countries recently.

Technical teams from Israel and Lebanon will convene in Rome for these discussions. The United States has been mediating the dialogue between the two neighboring nations. The primary goal of the talks is to advance the full implementation of the framework agreement, which includes expanding the pilot zone process, addressing border issues, and working on a comprehensive peace and security agreement.

The pilot zone initiative aims to reinstate Lebanese state authority in southern Lebanon and ensure the disarmament of terrorist groups in the region. The recent withdrawal of Israel Defense Forces from a pilot zone in southern Lebanon has sparked tensions, with Beirut accusing Jerusalem of obstructing the Lebanese Armed Forces’ operations in the area. However, the State Department has expressed optimism about the successful transfer of authority and views the pilot zone as a model for future arrangements along the border.

The US administration views the framework agreement as a crucial step towards resolving longstanding tensions between Israel and Lebanon and establishing a more stable security framework. The upcoming talks in Rome follow a previous meeting held in Washington on June 3, where delegations from both countries engaged in discussions facilitated by the United States. The talks in Rome coincide with Israel’s preparations for an upcoming Knesset election in October, raising concerns about potential complications in Israeli withdrawals and Lebanon’s desire for increased operational control in the south.
