US President Donald Trump announced that the United States would take on the role of the “Guardian of the Hormuz Strait,” insisting that countries utilizing the waterway must repay Washington 20% of all cargo expenses for security services. Trump emphasized that the Strait of Hormuz would remain accessible to all nations except Iran and its affiliates, as the US reinstated what he termed the “Iranian blockade.”
In a statement on Truth Social, Trump specified that the US would be recognized as the “THE GUARDIAN OF THE HORMUZ STRAIT” and expected reimbursement for ensuring safety in the volatile region. He reiterated that the Strait would operate without hindrance from Iran, with the exception of Iranian vessels and clients, while other countries would enjoy unrestricted passage.
During an interview with Fox News, Trump hinted at the impending announcement, asserting the US’s commitment to safeguarding the strait and seeking compensation for these efforts. He highlighted the necessity for reimbursement, citing the wealth of allied nations and the longstanding history of protecting the passage without remuneration.
Trump underscored that the US had safeguarded the strait for over five decades without compensation and emphasized the need for payment for future security services. He accused Iran of reneging on agreements made in recent talks and expressed readiness to take decisive action against the country.
