US President Donald Trump’s approval rating has dropped to its lowest level of his second term, standing at 42 percent among registered voters, down from 44 percent earlier this spring. The latest NBC News poll also indicates that Democrats are currently leading by five points on the generic Congressional ballot, a prelude to the 2026 midterm elections.
The survey reflects growing voter worries over inflation, which have been exacerbated by the conflict with Iran and disruptions in global energy supplies. Trump, on NBC’s Meet the Press, expressed optimism that inflation would decrease once the conflict subsides, stating, “When the war’s over, it’s coming down. It’s going to come down like a rock.”
Despite Trump’s reassurances, the poll suggests that many voters remain skeptical about the economy and the country’s trajectory. NBC’s chief data analyst noted a prevailing sense of public pessimism, with a majority of respondents believing that America’s best days are behind it.
The poll also highlighted significant political divides, with Republicans showing more pride in the country and confidence in institutions like the military, while Democrats expressed greater trust in colleges and universities. Moreover, there is widespread skepticism towards major national institutions such as Congress, the federal government, the news media, and the Supreme Court.
