The United States has reiterated its demand for the immediate release of political prisoners in Cuba, as Secretary of State Marco Rubio commemorated the fifth anniversary of the July 11, 2021, anti-government protests. Rubio emphasized that the Cuban people, who have endured repression and economic struggles under the Communist regime, deserve a better future. He highlighted the significant protests from five years ago when thousands of Cubans took to the streets seeking change and better opportunities for themselves and their families.
Rubio condemned the Cuban government’s response to the demonstrations, citing brutality and the arrest of numerous individuals. He expressed concern over the continued detention of hundreds of Cubans who were advocating for basic rights and dignity. The Secretary of State called for the immediate release of all political prisoners in Cuba, emphasizing the importance of respecting fundamental freedoms and human rights.
In addition to addressing the plight of political prisoners, Rubio underscored the economic challenges facing Cuba, describing the country’s economy as in “freefall.” He noted the severe hardships faced by the Cuban people, including blackouts, hunger, and deprivation. Rubio stated that the United States remains committed to supporting the Cuban population through humanitarian aid and the provision of essential goods like food and medicine.
Accusing the Cuban leadership of resisting meaningful reforms and perpetuating control over the population, Rubio emphasized the need for political and economic changes to foster prosperity in Cuba. He criticized the regime for aligning with hostile entities and posing national security threats to the United States. Rubio pledged to continue exerting pressure on Havana while advocating for reforms that prioritize peace, prosperity, and the well-being of the Cuban people.
