A swift response by US Secret Service agents and law enforcement averted a potentially severe attack at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, as top US officials commended the coordinated efforts across agencies for swiftly apprehending the gunman. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche lauded the courage and professionalism of law enforcement, emphasizing that the suspect was promptly subdued. The incident occurred on April 25 at the Washington Hilton, where key government officials were present for the annual dinner.
The suspect approached a security checkpoint on the terrace level of the hotel, one floor above the ballroom, around 8:40 p.m., according to investigators. A gunshot rang out as he passed through the checkpoint, injuring a Secret Service officer who was fortunately protected by a ballistic vest. In response, the officer fired multiple rounds, causing the suspect to be apprehended.
Officials highlighted that the effective response was a result of rigorous training and adherence to protocol. FBI Director Kash Patel mentioned the swift nationwide coordination of a large-scale investigation, involving the deployment of various resources and teams across states like California and Connecticut. Evidence, including firearms and shell casings, was sent for analysis at FBI laboratories in Quantico.
The FBI also conducted searches, interviews, and evidence collection in multiple states, while recovering relevant materials from the suspect’s hotel room. Praising the injured officer’s actions, Patel emphasized that law enforcement prevented a potentially catastrophic incident from escalating further. The collaborative efforts of agencies like the Secret Service, FBI, Department of Homeland Security, and Metropolitan Police Department were crucial in managing the situation.
