US Secretary of State Marco Rubio highlighted the crucial nature of the relationship between Washington and India. This statement came after his meeting with Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar during the ASEAN events in the Philippines. Rubio, along with other US officials, discussed various issues including regional security, trade, defense agreements, and the significance of the US-India bond.
Rubio’s meeting with Jaishankar was described as “productive” by US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor. Gor also hinted at Rubio’s potential visit to India later in the year. The discussions between Rubio and Jaishankar focused on key areas outlined in the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership, covering trade, tariffs, energy, defense, security, critical minerals, and artificial intelligence.
During their time in Manila, Rubio and Jaishankar attended the Quad Foreign Ministers Meeting alongside counterparts from Australia and Japan. In a joint statement, the ministers reaffirmed their commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific region, emphasizing cooperation with ASEAN and its member states. They discussed challenges in the region and ways to support the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific through shared priorities such as maritime security, economic prosperity, emerging technologies, and humanitarian assistance.
