US Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s recent statement hinting at a potential visit by President Donald Trump to India early next year has been seen as a positive opportunity by veteran leaders. Jagvinder Singh Virk, Chairman of Australia India Strategic Alliance, described Rubio’s statement as a significant development, emphasizing the need to reset strained relationships post the West Asia conflict. He highlighted the importance of not overlooking India, stating that it could have adverse consequences for any nation globally.
Former Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police S.P. Vaid echoed similar sentiments, noting a recent strain in US-India relations, particularly under President Trump’s administration. He pointed out instances where India faced tariffs and tensions, emphasizing the significance of Trump’s potential visit in strengthening ties. BJP MP Brij Lal welcomed the prospect of Trump’s visit, citing the economic partnership between the two nations and the nearing finalization of a trade deal.
Additionally, Marco Rubio praised India’s progress under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, acknowledging its emergence as a global power actively involved in international decision-making. Responding to Rubio’s comments, BJP leader Rohan Gupta urged the Opposition to support the US official’s commendation of PM Modi and India’s economic growth. In contrast, Congress MP Imran Masood criticized the government for allegedly favoring the US in trade deals, expressing concerns about the impact on India’s economy and farmers.
