US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is set to meet with India and other Quad partners during his upcoming visit to Southeast Asia. The focus of his visit will be the ASEAN Summit, providing opportunities for both bilateral and regional meetings. Rubio highlighted the importance of engaging with the region through the ASEAN platform.
During his visit, Rubio plans to engage with the Quad countries, including India, Australia, and Japan, in addition to the United States. He also mentioned a trilateral meeting with South Korea and Japan, along with possible meetings with Vietnam’s foreign minister and officials from other countries. Rubio is also scheduled to meet with the Philippine President during his visit.
While in Southeast Asia, Rubio may have a chance to meet Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on the sidelines of the ASEAN Summit. He emphasized the importance of maintaining dialogue between major powers like the US and China, despite existing disagreements. Rubio also mentioned the anticipated visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping to the US in September.
The Quadrilateral Security Dialogue, known as the Quad, involves India, the US, Japan, and Australia, focusing on various areas such as maritime security, critical technologies, and disaster relief. The ASEAN Summit, which Rubio will attend, is a key platform for regional engagement, with India and the US actively participating in ASEAN-led forums.
