A US Senate oversight hearing on the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) became confrontational as Democrats accused the agency of excessive force and civil liberties violations. Senator Richard Durbin criticized DHS Secretary Kristi Noem’s leadership, alleging cruelty against children and immigrant families. Durbin also questioned the labeling of individuals as “domestic terrorists,” causing distress to families.

Noem defended the department’s actions, offering condolences to affected families and emphasizing the provision of accurate information. Durbin raised concerns about the arrest of immigrants without serious criminal charges during Trump’s presidency. He highlighted potential risks of broad enforcement actions and criticized ICE agents for their tactics.

Durbin accused ICE agents of operating without coordination, wearing paramilitary gear, and violating constitutional protections. Noem defended the use of administrative warrants, citing their legality under Congress’s laws. She clarified that such warrants were rarely used for home entries and were upheld by the Supreme Court.
