US Democratic Senator Mark Warner criticized President Donald Trump’s approach to the conflict with Iran, labeling it as a “war of choice” that has negatively impacted the United States economically and strategically. Warner expressed disappointment in the lack of a comprehensive briefing from the administration regarding the agreement aimed at resolving the conflict. He highlighted the significant costs imposed on American consumers due to the conflict, including increased gas prices and additional military spending.
Warner disputed the administration’s assertion that the campaign had achieved its strategic objectives, emphasizing that the US is worse off after this “war of choice.” He noted that the Iranian leadership had become more hardline, with the IRGC gaining greater control. Warner also raised concerns about Iran’s missile capacity remaining largely intact and the agreement’s failure to address Iran’s support for regional armed groups like Hezbollah and the Houthis.
The Senator criticized provisions in the agreement that allowed Iran to resume oil sales, providing a financial boost to the Iranian government. Warner expressed skepticism about the proposed negotiations’ ability to bring about significant changes in Iran’s nuclear program. Despite expectations of the Strait of Hormuz reopening, Warner warned of Iran’s capability to disrupt the vital energy shipping lane at any time. He concluded by stating that the US had not achieved its strategic goals and lacked a clear plan moving forward.
