Senior US senators have engaged in a heated debate regarding President Donald Trump’s actions in Iran. Democrats have labeled the war as illegal and are pushing for the withdrawal of troops, citing concerns about American casualties. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer criticized the administration for withholding information about injured troops, vowing to push for a vote to end US involvement in the conflict.
Schumer highlighted that over 500 American troops have been injured in recent weeks, with details about nearly 100 casualties being kept from the public. He emphasized the need for transparency, accusing the Pentagon of concealing information to protect Trump politically. Meanwhile, Senator Tim Kaine revealed that the remains of three US troops killed in the conflict would be repatriated, bringing the total American casualties to 18.
Senator Kaine condemned the conflict as a “war of choice” and stressed that Congress had deemed it illegal. He urged lawmakers to use the appropriations process to limit funding for the military operations. On the other side, Senate Majority Leader John Thune defended Trump’s response, citing Iran’s violations and disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. Thune asserted that Trump’s actions were aimed at compelling Iran to return to negotiations.
Thune emphasized that Congress holds the power of the purse and should be involved in decisions regarding additional war funding. He mentioned that the funding request was not solely for Iran but also included provisions for replacing munitions. While most Republican senators are likely to support the funding, concerns have been raised about its size and the need for spending offsets.
