US Senators Cory Booker and Dave McCormick have put forth a bipartisan bill to enhance energy security, supply chains, and partnerships in the Eastern Mediterranean. The “Eastern Mediterranean Gateway Act” aims to strengthen ties between the US, India, the Middle East, and Europe through ports, digital corridors, and infrastructure development. This legislation recognizes the Eastern Mediterranean as a strategic gateway within the India–Middle East–Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC).
The bill focuses on bolstering energy security, promoting innovation, and fostering regional partnerships. It underscores the importance of the Eastern Mediterranean in enhancing stability and cooperation among the US, India, the Middle East, and Europe. The proposed act seeks to deepen trade relations and secure energy flows in the region.
Senator McCormick highlighted the urgency of the initiative, citing recent regional tensions. He emphasized the pivotal role of countries like Greece, Cyprus, Israel, and Egypt in providing crucial support during times of need. The Eastern Mediterranean Gateway Act aims to prioritize the region for the US and safeguard critical trade and energy routes from potential threats.
The legislation also emphasizes the significance of energy infrastructure projects, such as interconnectors and LNG terminals, in ensuring European energy security. It underscores the collaborative efforts of key US partners in the region, including Greece, Cyprus, Egypt, and Israel, in promoting economic development and stability. Additionally, the bill calls for enhanced defence cooperation, educational exchanges, and multilateral engagement to strengthen regional ties.
