As the United States gears up to commemorate its 250th independence anniversary, American small business owners are calling on Congress for greater policy certainty, improved access to capital, and a robust workforce. Business owners from various sectors emphasized these needs during a House Small Business Committee hearing, highlighting the pivotal role entrepreneurs have played in shaping the US economy over the past 250 years.

During the hearing, discussions between Republican and Democratic lawmakers touched on various issues like tariffs, immigration, taxation, and healthcare. However, the focus remained on common concerns such as escalating costs, financial obstacles, labor shortages, and an unpredictable business environment.

Committee Chairman Roger Williams underscored the historical significance of entrepreneurs in driving America’s economic prosperity since its inception. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that small businesses can continue to compete, innovate, and expand to secure the nation’s future economic success.

Top Democrat of the Committee, Johnny Olszewski Jr., hailed small businesses as the backbone of the US economy. He stressed that these businesses are grappling with mounting challenges due to rising costs and economic uncertainties, asserting that small business issues transcend political affiliations and are fundamentally American concerns.

Witnesses at the hearing, including Ohio restaurateur Adrian Adornetto and North Carolina-based entrepreneur Philip Freeman, highlighted the critical need for improved financing opportunities and regulatory clarity to support entrepreneurial ventures. They emphasized the importance of creating an environment where small businesses can thrive, create jobs, and pass on opportunities to future generations.

Anne Shybunko-Moore, CEO of New York defense manufacturer GSE Dynamics, urged policymakers to bolster domestic manufacturing through investment incentives, workforce development, and reliable supply chains. She stressed the significance of enhancing workforce training and attracting young talent to the manufacturing sector.

Maryland entrepreneur Veronica Kuhl, who immigrated from the Dominican Republic, shared her journey of pursuing the American dream. She emphasized the necessity of a stable operating environment for entrepreneurs, calling on Congress to streamline regulations, support workforce development, and embrace new technologies to foster business growth.

The hearing, held ahead of the July 4 celebrations marking 250 years since the US declared independence, aims to explore the role of entrepreneurship in the nation’s economic progress. Congress is leveraging this milestone to deliberate on policies that can enhance American competitiveness in the years to come.
