The US State Department has advised American citizens to reconsider travel plans to Pakistan due to security concerns. The advisory highlights risks such as crime, civil unrest, terrorism, and kidnapping. Pakistan has been placed under a Level 3 advisory, indicating a high risk of terrorist attacks in various locations including transportation hubs, hotels, markets, and government buildings.
Some regions in Pakistan, like parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, have been designated as Level 4: Do Not Travel areas. The advisory specifically warns against travel to these areas due to common assassination and kidnapping attempts, especially targeting government officials and private citizens. US citizens of Pakistani origin are also advised to be cautious.
The advisory further mentions specific areas to avoid, including Balochistan Province and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Province, due to terrorism and kidnapping threats. It emphasizes that violent extremist groups have carried out attacks in these regions, as well as in major cities like Karachi and Islamabad. The US State Department also notes that local law in Pakistan prohibits protesting or demonstrating without a permit, with potential consequences for US citizens, including detention for participating in protests or posting critical content on social media.
Earlier this month, the US State Department announced the suspension of processing immigrant visas for applicants from 75 countries, including Pakistan and Bangladesh. This move is expected to cause delays in visa approvals and a backlog of applications. Pakistan’s Foreign Office has expressed hope for the resumption of normal visa processing in the future, despite the current suspension.
