The United States is being advised by senior Pentagon officials to enhance its military space capabilities swiftly due to escalating worries about China’s advancements in space warfare. Top US military leaders emphasized to lawmakers the necessity for the Space Force to receive increased funding, manpower, and combat capabilities to counter emerging threats from China and uphold American military supremacy in space. General B Chance Saltzman, the Space Force Chief, characterized the current situation as a significant shift in military space competition, highlighting the continuous efforts of adversaries to diminish US advantages in the space domain.

The proposed budget for FY2027 includes a substantial allocation of USD 71.1 billion for the Space Force, marking one of the largest increases since its establishment in 2019. This funding is intended to aid the US in constructing new missile warning systems, resilient satellite networks, space-based targeting systems, and counter-space capabilities, as stated by Saltzman. He stressed to lawmakers that augmenting the service budget and strength is imperative for national security.

The Space Force is planning to boost personnel strength by 27% while establishing new squadrons and acquisition offices to oversee the expanding space missions efficiently. Additionally, officials mentioned the development of more resilient satellite constellations capable of withstanding attacks during potential future conflicts. Saltzman cautioned about China’s rapid modernization in various military technologies, including space systems, satellite communications, and missile tracking.

Air Force Secretary Troy Meink echoed these concerns, underscoring the need for accelerated innovation at the Pentagon to keep pace with China’s swift military modernization. Lawmakers from both political parties frequently associated future space warfare with possible conflict scenarios involving Taiwan and the Indo-Pacific region. General Kenneth Wilsbach emphasized the critical importance of both air and space superiority in contemporary conflicts, citing the significance of space dominance for achieving air superiority in the 21st century.

The Pentagon is increasingly focusing on integrating commercial technology into military space operations, as revealed during the hearings. Saltzman highlighted the achievements of Tactical Surveillance, Reconnaissance, and Tracking programs that leverage commercial satellite imagery and private-sector space capabilities to support military missions worldwide. Officials also cautioned that existing launch facilities at Cape Canaveral and Vandenberg might soon face capacity constraints due to escalating demand.
