US Vice President JD Vance acknowledged the significant role played by his Indian American wife, Usha Vance, in his return to Christianity. Vance highlighted how Usha’s support in their interfaith marriage and her influence on his views of love, family, and commitment were pivotal in his spiritual transformation. He expressed that falling in love with Usha made him recognize the sacred nature of love, shaping his understanding of faith.

In a candid interview with New York Times columnist Ross Douthat, Vance shared that his relationship with Usha not only impacted his personal life but also reshaped his faith perspective after a period of atheism and spiritual uncertainty. He discussed his new memoir, “Communion: Finding My Way Back to Faith,” which chronicles his journey from a challenging childhood and loss of faith to embracing Catholicism.

Vance revealed that his connection to Christianity waned following the passing of his grandmother, who had been a cornerstone of his religious beliefs. He noted that her death coincided with his shift to atheism, marking a significant turning point in his spiritual journey.

The Vice President reflected on his past detachment from religion, focusing on academic and professional pursuits that left him feeling unfulfilled. He emphasized that his realization of inner hollowness stemmed from a relentless pursuit of success. Vance suggested that his return to faith was influenced more by personal relationships than theological debates.

Vance extensively praised his wife, Usha, underscoring her support despite not sharing his Christian faith. He expressed gratitude for her backing as he navigated the challenges of balancing family life and religious practice. Vance highlighted Usha’s unexpected embrace of responsibilities that came with his return to faith, acknowledging her patience and unwavering support.

According to Vance, Usha’s impact extended beyond their marriage, fundamentally altering his perceptions of marital relationships and commitment. He credited her for reshaping his understanding of the sanctity of love and partnership, even though she did not share his religious beliefs. Vance also acknowledged the role of Christian friends and families in guiding him back to faith, noting their exemplary lives that reflected values he aspired to embody.

Now 41, Vance shared that the responsibilities of marriage and fatherhood prompted him to confront profound questions about purpose and meaning, ultimately leading him back to Christianity. Usha Vance, a lawyer and daughter of Indian immigrants, has emerged as a prominent figure in US public life alongside her husband’s political journey, contributing to the national discourse while maintaining a notable presence on the public stage.
