The US withholding nearly $4 billion in dues to the UN is pushing the organization to a financial crisis. President Donald Trump mentioned in an interview that he could resolve the issue easily. However, he did not commit to releasing the owed funds, a critical aspect of the UN’s financial woes.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres alerted UN missions about the imminent financial collapse of the organization. Despite this warning, he did not specifically address the US arrears. Washington currently owes $2.196 billion to the UN’s regular budget and $1.8 billion to its peacekeeping budget.
Excluding a $768 million assessment due by year-end, the US’s outstanding dues amount to $1.429 billion. As the largest contributor to the UN, the US’s arrears significantly impact the organization’s financial stability. Trump, known for his criticism of the UN, expressed a more positive outlook in the interview, highlighting the UN’s potential for conflict resolution.
