The Uttar Pradesh government has revealed its strategy to transition towards bioenergy and position itself as a hub for biogas investment. Plans include setting up mini biogas plants in over a thousand households across all districts, offering fixed and portable models. The initiative, led by the Yogi Adityanath government, aims to convert cow-based products into sustainable sources of income, energy, and employment.

Experts from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT Delhi) are collaborating with the government to provide technical assistance in establishing these biogas plants. More than 15 prominent companies have shown interest in participating in rural areas, with plans for subsidies to support villagers in plant installations. ‘Gaushalas’ (cow shelters) will be transformed into ‘Rural Resource and Energy Hubs’ to create a complete value chain from biogas production to organic fertilizer generation.

The Uttar Pradesh Gau Seva Aayog Chairman, Shyam Bihari Gupta, highlighted the strength of the scheme’s technical and industrial partnerships, emphasizing IIT Delhi’s role in overseeing plant technology and youth training. Major companies in the sector are set to implement and expand the project in rural areas, ensuring modern technology benefits reach villages. A training program by IIT Delhi will equip youth with skills to operate biogas plants, fostering a new generation of ‘green technicians’ and self-employment opportunities.

The biogas produced will serve as domestic fuel, reducing LPG costs for rural households, while the slurry from the plants will be used as organic fertilizer, promoting natural farming practices and decreasing reliance on chemical fertilizers. The campaign’s goal is to enhance rural energy self-sufficiency and boost organic manure production.
