Amid challenges posed by heatwaves and fluctuating climate, the Uttar Pradesh government has developed an ‘action plan’ to assist students in coping with extreme heat by adopting appropriate practices. Special guidelines have been issued to teachers to safeguard students from heat-related issues such as exhaustion and heatstroke. The Basic Education Department has introduced a ‘Guideline for Teachers on Sensitising Students to Heat-Related Illnesses (2026)’ to equip teachers with necessary skills and information on heatwave protection.
The guidelines focus on helping teachers identify symptoms of heat exhaustion and heatstroke, administer first aid, and ensure the well-being of students. Schools are advised to implement a ‘heat action plan’ to raise awareness among students, parents, and the school community through informative posters. Emphasizing the crucial role of teachers in ensuring student safety during heatwaves, the guidelines suggest educating students on heatwave protection measures during various school activities.
Each school will be required to establish a ‘School Heat Action Plan’ and appoint ‘Health Nodal Teachers’ to oversee heatwave-related activities. Orientation sessions will be conducted for teachers, staff, and students to enhance preparedness. Schools are instructed to display messages on heatwave protection and emergency contact numbers prominently on their premises.
To ensure student safety, schools must have first-aid kits, ORS, digital thermometers, and access to emergency medical services. Strenuous physical activities will be suspended during ‘Orange’ or ‘Red’ heatwave alerts, with a focus on providing clean drinking water and encouraging students to stay hydrated. Guidelines also recommend wearing light-colored cotton clothing, using hats or umbrellas, and consuming water-rich fruits like watermelon, muskmelon, and cucumber.
In case a student shows symptoms of heat-related illnesses, immediate action should be taken, including moving them to a shaded area for first aid and contacting emergency medical services if needed. Special attention is advised for students with pre-existing conditions or recent illnesses.
