Pappu Devi from Bhadohi district exemplifies this shift, earning Rs 8-10 lakh annually through her successful mushroom cultivation enterprise. This move away from traditional crops like wheat and paddy towards innovative farming practices is transforming rural livelihoods.
With assistance from the Uttar Pradesh State Rural Livelihood Mission (UPSRLM), Pappu Devi entered the mushroom farming sector, significantly boosting her family’s financial status. The UPSRLM, part of the state government’s initiatives, is empowering rural women by encouraging self-employment and financial independence. Through training, technical support, and financial aid, women like Pappu Devi are exploring new income opportunities.
Pappu Devi kickstarted her mushroom venture with an initial investment of Rs 2.5 lakh from personal savings and a Rs 50,000 loan. With guidance from Development Alternatives and UPSRLM, her small-scale mushroom cultivation has grown into a sustainable and profitable business. Beyond personal success, she has created job opportunities for other women in her village, contributing to the local rural economy.
Inspired by Pappu Devi’s model, self-help groups (SHGs) and rural women in the region are venturing into similar businesses. Her story highlights the impact of government-supported schemes in fostering grassroots entrepreneurship. Pappu Devi emphasizes that with training, financial aid, and determination, rural women can achieve significant success in self-employment.
Government initiatives in Uttar Pradesh, led by Yogi Adityanath, aim to diversify agriculture, boost rural incomes, and empower women economically. Mushroom farming, a low-investment and high-return activity, is being encouraged for small-scale farmers and women entrepreneurs.
